Thousands march in Tunis to demand freedoms, judicial independence and purchasing power

Thousands of people took part in a march through Tunis on Saturday, called by six national organisations: the UGTT labour union, the journalists' union SNJT, the bar association ONAT, the human rights league LTDH, the FTDES and the women's rights group ATFD. Protesters gathered at Place Mohamed Ali and walked via Avenue de Paris to Avenue Habib Bourguiba, chanting "Work, freedom, national dignity." They denounced falling purchasing power, rising taxes and the concentration of power in the presidency, and demanded judicial independence and the release of political and opinion detainees. No clashes or arrests were reported.
