Wael Naouar, the jailed coordinator of the Global Sumud flotilla, has refused food since 16 August, day 37 as of Monday, and three fellow detainees held over the same case, Ghassen Henchiri, Ghassen Boughediri and Nabil Chennoufi, joined him on 10 September and are on their 12th day. The Tunisian Human Rights League says Naouar has lost 21 kilos and was hospitalised on 8 September after fainting; all four are held at Mornaguia prison since March pending a money-laundering investigation into the flotilla's financing, which they and their supporters deny.

Tunisian and Algerian rescue teams recovered the body of an Algerian border guard on Sunday from a watercourse at Oued Serri, in the Ain Defla area near Haidra in Kasserine governorate, after flash floods from heavy rain over Algeria's Tebessa region swept him and a colleague across the border. National Guard, civil protection and forest agents resumed the search for the second guard on Monday; he remains missing. The incident came during a week of storms that has also flooded parts of Greater Tunis since 17 September.

Tunisia's Protection Civile said its units carried out 333 rescue and safety operations in the 24 hours to Monday morning: 102 road rescues, 190 other rescue operations, 29 fires and 12 further interventions. The service put its teams on alert nationwide, with advance posts stationed in flood-prone low-lying areas, for a new round of rain due to begin Wednesday, which officials said should be milder than the storms that have flooded parts of Greater Tunis since 17 September.
