Thousands march in Italy-wide strike against living costs and rearmament

Grassroots union USB led a nationwide strike under the slogan “shut everything down”, drawing workers, students and pensioners into marches in Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples and other cities against rising living costs and European rearmament spending. A breakaway group clashed with police near Rome's Colosseum, throwing bottles and burning bins before eight people were detained. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi warned that the way such street protests are being mobilised is insidious, after earlier unrest in Milan.
