Von der Leyen proposes emergency suspension of the EU's right to asylum

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a framework that could suspend the EU's right to asylum for a limited time, after roughly 82,000 migrants have entered the Spanish exclave of Ceuta from Morocco since the more than 70,000 who crossed on 30-31 July. The UN refugee agency and rights groups warn the move could enable illegal pushbacks; Greece and Poland have previously suspended asylum processing temporarily during past surges.
