A magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits western Colombia

The quake struck the Pacific department of Chocó at 7:34 a.m. local time on Monday. The US Geological Survey put the epicentre five kilometres east of San José del Palmar at a depth of 107 kilometres. Governor Nubia Córdoba reported injuries and serious damage to buildings in the regional capital Quibdó without giving figures; the shock was felt in Bogotá, Cali, Medellín and other cities, where residents evacuated homes and offices.
