Ahmed Néjib Chebbi, the 80-year-old opposition figure serving a 12-year sentence in the conspiracy-against-state-security case, suspended the hunger strike he began on October 1 over restrictions on detainees' access to information, his family said on Wednesday. Prison administration representatives met him and pledged, within their authority, to guarantee detainees' access to reliable information. His family said he had lost significant weight and was taken to hospital several times during the week, and described the suspension as a gesture of good faith pending real implementation of that pledge.

Kaïs Bouzouzia, Mariem Halfaoui, Marouen Bedhiafi and Hadhami Hammami are due before the Tunis Court of First Instance on Thursday, prosecuted over a September 19 march in support of Sumud Flotilla detainees who were on hunger strike. A defence coordination group says at least 13 people, and by some counts more than 15, were arrested the night after that march, for reasons authorities never stated, and the rights group Contre la criminalisation de l'action civile calls the hearings a new step in the repression of activism. The case follows the release this week of a 17-year-old held in the same march, after President Saied ordered his school reinstatement.
