Poland's top court descends into chaos as rival judges both claim to lead it

A Polish Constitutional Tribunal judge, backed by the justice ministry, declared herself in charge on 30 October and suspended the court's PiS-aligned president for a month; he rejected her authority and called it a coup d'état. Protesters clashed with police outside the tribunal in Warsaw, and President Karol Nawrocki cut short an official trip to Senegal to return home. Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it a painful but necessary step to undo the previous government's judicial overhaul.
