ECB clears UniCredit to take control of Commerzbank

The European Central Bank cleared Italian lender UniCredit on Thursday to raise its stake in Germany's Commerzbank above 30 percent with no upper limit. The remaining regulatory steps are expected to be completed toward the end of 2026, after which UniCredit would control roughly half of Commerzbank's voting rights, capping a multi-year push against German political resistance to the takeover.
