Lithuania's parliament takes first step toward lifting nuclear weapons ban on its soil

Lawmakers voted 106 to 18 to begin removing Article 137, which has barred foreign military bases and weapons of mass destruction from Lithuanian territory, citing Russia's nuclear build-up in Kaliningrad and Belarus. A final vote is due on January 12, 2027, after a three-month waiting period; Lithuania says it should not be less protected than NATO neighbours Latvia, Estonia and Poland, which have no such restriction.
