UGTT workshop: Tunisia's social security funds carry a 7-billion-dinar deficit

At a Saturday workshop on Tunisia's social security system, organised by the UGTT labour union, social security specialist and CNSS board member Hedi Dahmane said the three main funds' cumulative deficit is nearing 7 billion dinars. He said the ratio of active contributors to each retiree has fallen from 8.3 to 2.3, and is projected to reach 1.1 by 2031. About 2.5 million informal-economy workers remain outside the system. Dahmane traced the funds' troubles back to 1993, saying only ad-hoc fixes have followed since, not structural reform.
