Abbas confirms 28 November date for first Palestinian elections in 20 years

President Mahmoud Abbas reaffirmed the 28 November legislative vote will go ahead despite serious doubts inside his own Fatah movement, which has not faced an election since Hamas won in 2006 and took control of Gaza. Israel has refused to let ballot boxes, papers and ink into Gaza, nearly two million Palestinians there remain displaced, and Palestinians in East Jerusalem would need Israeli permission to take part. Candidate registration was due to open on 26 September.
