Venezuela's Rodríguez promises elections at the UN, no date, meets Trump on debt
Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, told the UN General Assembly on 23 September that 'elections will be held in Venezuela', giving no date, and said her government has begun a 'political dialogue with opposition sectors' toward a vote with 'equal conditions for all'. She took office after a US military raid in January removed then-leader Nicolás Maduro to the United States, where he is awaiting trial on drug-trafficking charges. Rodríguez met briefly with President Trump the next day, in talks reported to have covered restructuring Venezuela's sovereign debt; critics say Washington has deprioritised demands for free elections in favour of economic deals with the interim government.
