US reportedly withholds Sudan army chief's UN visa to press for a ceasefire

Sudanese activists and journalists this week criticised reports that Washington had withheld army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's UN visa ahead of the General Assembly, in what was described as an attempt to pressure him into accepting a ceasefire proposal. The reports came as Egypt's foreign minister met his Sudanese counterpart and a senior US adviser to discuss building on existing efforts to de-escalate the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has run since April 2023. Separately this week, the army said it had repelled an RSF attack in Blue Nile state.
