Canada's retaliatory tariffs on US goods take effect as trade talks collapse

Canada's retaliatory tariffs on roughly US$20 billion of US goods, including steel, dairy, clothing and farm equipment, took effect just after midnight on Tuesday, after negotiations in Washington collapsed on Friday. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada suspended talks after the US made "unreasonable demands" and "last-minute changes". The escalation follows the US imposing 50% tariffs on an equivalent value of Canadian goods in August.
