Armenia's PM says country will apply for EU membership

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told parliament on Monday that Armenia will apply for EU membership 'in the near future' and said he would welcome the country's withdrawal from the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO). He said Armenia would stay in the CSTO for now, but that a choice between it and the EU is becoming unavoidable; Moscow responded by warning of 'deep trade contradictions'. Yerevan's pivot follows years of frustration with Russia's failure to back Armenia in its conflicts with Azerbaijan.
