South Korea and the US begin Ulchi Freedom Shield on 17 August

The annual exercise runs to 27 August with about 18,000 South Korean troops, roughly the same number as last year. It has been expanded with training against drones, GPS jamming and cyberattacks, explicitly drawing on the war in Ukraine. It takes place while the two countries negotiate the transfer of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul.
