Central bank becomes the state's main lender, direct advances up elevenfold since 2023

The central bank's direct advances to the Tunisian state rose from 1.4 billion dinars at end-2023 to 16.25 billion in June 2026, now 2.17 times larger than its refinancing of commercial banks, according to the bank's own balance-sheet figures. Over the same period its market purchases of treasury bills fell 54%, so direct lending has replaced market financing. The central bank's net income fell for three straight years, from 1,473 to 1,154 million dinars, while banknotes in circulation grew in parallel.

According to Central Bank of Tunisia figures, banknotes and coins in circulation reached 29.357 billion dinars on 12 October, up about 16% from a year earlier. Cash has grown faster than prices, economic activity and savings, and now makes up 18.7% of the M3 money supply, up from 17.6% in December. The minimum savings rate was cut to 6% in January, leaving savings with little real return against September's 5.6% inflation rate.

State steelmaker El Fouladh nears financing for 330-million-dinar plan to triple output

A mission from the Islamic Development Bank visited El Fouladh's Bizerte site to review financing for a 330-million-dinar modernisation plan, the state steelmaker's chief executive Sami Kabtini said. The plan, which includes a new ladle furnace and continuous casting equipment, aims to roughly triple El Fouladh's production capacity and cut Tunisia's reliance on imported steel billets. The bank's own board still has to approve the loan.

Government says bureaucracy simplification drive is 70% complete, targets 2,250 procedures by 2027

In a written answer to parliament published today, the presidency's reform unit said a programme to simplify about 2,250 administrative procedures is roughly 70% complete, with 80% of them to be digitised in whole or in part by 2027. It said 34 digital service centres opened across 21 governorates this year, serving more than 900,000 people, with 68 more planned through 2030.

Gulf states condemn Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia as Yemen fighting intensifies

The Gulf Cooperation Council condemned repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia on Sunday, after a foreign ministers' meeting in Manama, and backed the kingdom's right to self-defence. Saudi forces shot down two drones near Riyadh and in the Eastern Province the same morning. In Yemen, government forces are pressing offensives on several fronts, the fighting has displaced more than 233,000 people, and the World Health Organization warns Taiz's twelve hospitals have only four days of fuel left.

Venezuela's opposition rallies around Machado as leader, demands free elections

Parties in the Unitary Democratic Platform met in Caracas on Sunday and agreed to “recognise and support” the leadership of exiled Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado, while renewing their demand for free elections after the contested 2018 and 2024 votes. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who has led the country since a US military operation removed Nicolás Maduro in January, has President Trump's backing for a three-phase plan that places stabilisation before any political transition.

Kenya confirms eighth Ebola case as regional outbreak widens

Kenya's Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, confirmed an eighth case on Sunday, a 49-year-old care attendant likely exposed to the country's first patient. The outbreak in neighbouring DR Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no vaccine, has killed more than 4,500 people out of over 9,400 cases since May and is the country's deadliest on record; the virus has now reached an eighth province. Authorities in North Kivu are imposing a one-week entry ban and restricting public gatherings from Monday.

Macron vows accountability after looting and riots across France, over 2,000 arrested

In a Sunday address, President Emmanuel Macron said looters would pay for the damage and that those who sought to “bring down the Republic” would be held accountable. Saturday's cost-of-living and student protests turned into looting and fires in several cities; authorities raised their arrest count to more than 2,000, up from the roughly 400 reported the same Saturday, and at least 600 police officers and firefighters were injured. Marine Le Pen accused Macron of laxity, while left and green parties criticised heavy-handed policing of peaceful marchers.

Spain now sends patrol boats out to meet Moroccan vessels near Ceuta

After the Moroccan warship Mohammed VI entered Spanish waters in late July, the Spanish navy has changed its routine: patrol vessels such as the Atalaya and the Isla de León now sail out to meet Moroccan ships rather than only tracking them from shore. Spain distinguishes between “innocent passage” under the law of the sea and movements it judges could threaten Ceuta's security, while trying to keep its relationship with Rabat intact.
